From's Gambit Trap
A trap for Black in the Bird Opening: From's Gambit. White's natural-looking 4.Nc3 gives Black mate.
The moves
How it works
After 3...Bxd6 the queen and bishop both aim at g3. Nc3?? (anything but Nf3) allows ...Qh4+ g3 Qxg3+ hxg3 Bxg3#.
What it wins
Black gets mate.
How White avoids it
Only Nf3 stops ...Qh4+: after anything else it is ...Qh4+ g3 Qxg3+ hxg3 Bxg3#. The safe move is Nf3.
